Rules of IUPAC Nomenclature/unit-12

Nomenclature:

The IUPAC rules for naming organic compounds are given below:

1) Select the longest chain containing the functional group (parent chain).

2) Name the longest chain.

3) Number the chain from the end closer to the functional group.

4) Indicates the position of functional group by the number of the first (lowest numbered) carbon

atom involved in the functional group.

5) Alkyl group and other substituents are numbered, named and placed as prefixes in alphabetic

order.

6) Compound containing two functional groups are named as di.

7) For cyclic compound we prefix cyclo—-.
